eCops Weekly Policing Update – Somersham District 15th-21st March

Here is our weekly summary of offences and incidents affecting your community, reported to police during the period 15th to 21st March. I am sorry to say that there is an unusually large number of incidents to mention this week:

Somersham Road, Pidley – Thieves stole a single-axle trailer from the garden of a house on Somersham Road, Pidley, at some time between midday on Tuesday 12th and Wednesday morning, 13th March. Wheel-locks and registration plates were removed before the thieves drove off with the trailer. (Ref 35/18454/19)
St Ives Road, Somersham – CCTV recorded pictures of a male driving a white Transit van drawing up at a road-side fruit and vegetable stall on St Ives Road, Somersham, at lunchtime on Wednesday 13th March, taking some produce and driving off again without leaving any money. On Saturday afternoon, 16th March, the same suspect returned in the same vehicle, took more items, and again left without making any payment. (Ref 35/18544/19)
Colnefields, Somersham – Thieves targeted out-buildings along Colnfields, Somersham, on Tuesday evening, 19th March. Various tools and other items were taken but a number of the stolen items were subsequently discovered abandoned in a nearby field:

  • In one incident, an axe, a chain-saw and a strimmer were stolen from a shed. The owner heard noises at around 9:30 pm and on investigating discovered the shed door open and the items missing. (Ref 35/19433/19)
  • In a second incident, a shed and a workshop in the garden of another house were broken into and a petrol chainsaw was stolen. (Ref 35/19452/19)
  • At a third property, a go-kart was stolen from a garage at the back of the house. The owner discovered the garage door open and a wheelie bin moved out of the way. (Ref 35/19470/19)
  • Two sheds in the garden of another house were broken into and gardening equipment, including a chain-saw and a strimmer, were taken. (Ref 35/19498/19)
  • A shed in the garden of another house was broken into, a garden fence damaged and a tree knocked over by thieves who stole a strimmer and other tools. (Ref 35/19536/19)
  • A strimmer, a hedge trimmer and a chain-saw were stolen from another shed broken into by thieves who climbed over a wire fence to get into the garden from the fields behind. (Ref 35/19562/19)

The Bank, Somersham – Thieves stole an entire Royal Mail post-box, including its contents, from a location on The Bank, Somersham, at some time between midday on Tuesday 19th and midday on Wednesday 20th March. The post-box was of the free-standing variety. (Ref 35/19502/19)
Warboys Road, Pidley – Police searched the area between Pidley and Warboys on Wednesday afternoon, 20th March, following a report of suspected hare-coursers seen on nearby fields. Two or three men in a dark-coloured off-road vehicle had been spotted, last seen heading towards Warboys, but no vehicle matching the description could be found. (Ref CC-20032019-0335)
Springfield, Somersham – A thief smashed the front passenger window of a car left in a small car-park at the Nature Reserve near Springfield, Somersham, and stole a pair of sunglasses from inside, on Thursday morning, 21st March. (Ref 35/19792/19)
The Bank, Somersham – A thief smashed the window of a car left parked outside a house on The Bank, Somersham, at lunchtime on Thursday 21st March, and stole a woman’s coat, handbag and purse from the back seat. (Ref 35/19800/19)
Somersham Road, Pidley – Two male suspects were seen climbing into a four-by-four vehicle left parked outside farm buildings on Somersham Road, Pidley, at midday on Thursday 21st March, in what is assumed to be an attempted theft. When challenged, they ran back to their own car and drove off at speed. Police checks have showed that the car they were using had stolen number plates. (Ref 35/19798/19)

Colnefields, Somersham – A car left on the driveway of a house at Colnfields was broken into at lunchtime on Thursday 21st March by a thief who smashed the passenger-side window and then stole a woman’s handbag that had been left on the passenger’s seat. The bag contained the owner’s purse, with cash and cards, her umbrella, sunglasses and several other items. A cyclist on a lane near Oundle later discovered the bag discarded on the roadside and reported it to the police, who have returned the items to their owner. (Ref 35/19808/19)
Fen Road, Pidley – Thieves stole a cash-box from a road-side stall on Fen Road, Pidley, on Thursday afternoon, 21st March. The box, which contained a small amount of money, was wrenched from the barrow it was attached to by the thieves who then drove off with it. (Ref 35/19958/19)
