Press Release – HDC SUPPORTS HUNTINGDONSHIRE COMMUNITY GROUP TO INTRODUCE AFTER SCHOOL CLUB AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES – 27/04/2023

HUNTINGDONSHIRE DISTRICT COUNCIL SUPPORTS HUNTINGDONSHIRE COMMUNITY GROUP TO INTRODUCE AFTER SCHOOL CLUB AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

In partnership with Huntingdonshire District Council (HDC), Huntingdonshire Community Group (HCG) has initiated their Health Inequalities Project, funded through Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Integrated Care System.

HCG, one of the 15 groups working on the Health Inequalities Project, collected residents views on the type of activites they would like to see help contribute to the health priorities in Huntingdon when they attended their ‘Curry and Games Night’ in December. HCG are offering an after school multi-sports club, delivered by One Leisure Active Lifestyles, at Thongsley Fields Primary & Nursery School. Sessions take place on Wednesday afternoons 3.15pm – 4.15pm, offering a variety of activities and sports in a fun, relaxed environment, free of charge. To sign your child up to the sessions, please contact Thongsley Fields Primary School.

Alongside this, HCG worked with One Leisure Active Lifestyles to offer multi-sport activities at One Leisure Huntingdon throughout the Easter Holidays. The session was throughoughly enjoyed by the children, and they were able to take part in a variety of sports in a comfortable environment. There will be further opportunities throughout the Summer Holidays for children to sign up to similar sessions.

The Health Inequalities Project has enabled HCG to appoint their first employee, an exciting development for the group. HCG have appointed a Project Administrator to support projects including; Youth Sports Sessions, Cooking on a Budget Courses alongside the existing Community Fridge, Job Club and Advice & Support Hub Service.

Founder of Huntingdonshire Community Group, Patrick Kadewere, said: “Huntingdonshire community group is delighted to have been awarded funding through the Health Inequalities Project.

“The children of Thongsley Fields Primary & Nursery School are really enjoying the after-school sessions. The relaxed atmosphere the Active Lifestyles team bring enables it to be inclusive to all. The Easter Holidays saw 19 children attend One Leisure Huntingdon for a 2-hour sports session. It was wonderful to see the appreciation from both parents and children – everyone had a great time! We are very much looking forward to working with the team to offer sessions throughout the summer holidays too.

“In addition, we are delighted to announce that the funding has enabled us to employ our first member of staff to HCG, who is local to the area. This Project Administrator will help us run all activities relating to the Health Inequalities Project, which will also include setting up a ‘cooking on a budget course’.

“All at HCG would like to thank HDC for this opportunity. We are excited to see what is next for us as a group, and to continue to do all we can to support the residents of Huntingdon.”
Executive Councillor for Community and Health, Cllr Ben Pitt, said: “The work HCG are doing in Huntingdon aligns perfectly with HDC’s key priority to improve the quality of life for local people.

“The group are offering some brilliant activities to support young people’s health and wellbeing, while also providing employment opportunities for local people.
“I encourage residents of Huntingdon to get involved with these activities. And if anyone has some spare time, remember that HCG is primarily a volunteer-run organisation, and they’re always happy to welcome new volunteers.”
